EXPRESSIVE ARTS THROUGH WEALTH OUT OF WASTE

Engaging in expressive arts within the school setting offers a multitude of advantages for students. It serves as a platform for self-expression and creativity, allowing them to explore their thoughts and emotions freely. Through artistic activities, students cultivate improved communication skills, both verbal and non-verbal, while also enhancing their problem-solving abilities by encouraging innovative thinking. The confidence gained from success in artistic endeavors boosts self-esteem, and the collaborative nature of many artistic projects teaches valuable teamwork skills. Beyond these immediate benefits, involvement in the arts has been linked to improved academic performance and serves as a stress-reliever, promoting mental well-being. Overall, participation in expressive arts equips students with essential life skills, nurtures their creativity, and fosters a deeper appreciation for diverse cultures and perspectives.

In Puducherry’s Government High School, Mr. Umapathi, a devoted teacher, encourages expressive art through yearly “Wealth out of Waste” projects. This year, they’re all about pencils, the very first tool for new students. The goal? To highlight the importance of the National Education Policy by using pencils in their art. The students and their teacher want to get everyone talking about the NEP through their creative pencil-themed projects.

The Government implemented a “No Bag Day” initiative in schools to alleviate educational stress on students. This move sparked the emergence of the “Wealth out of Waste” program, offering students a chance to collaborate and dedicate months to their projects. Leveraging eco-friendly materials like coconut shells, sticks, and waste paper, they crafted intricate art pieces. These creations are now proudly exhibited at community fairs and events, serving as powerful ambassadors for educational and environmental awareness, spreading their message far and wide.

These stories vividly demonstrate the transformative power of education in shaping students’ lives for the better. They also chronicle the inspiring journeys of parents who tirelessly strive to pave the way for their children’s success, serving as a beacon of encouragement for other families. These narratives not only highlight the importance of education but also advocate for the enrollment of children in educational pursuits, fostering a collective belief in its life-changing potential. i4 Connect Foundation participated in learning these techniques and to help design a wider model to reach more schools, teachers and students.
